Night Watch - Russian Movie

Night Watch
So we saw night watch a week ago and it's a great movie. Apparently it's stars are well known Russian pop singers and actors, but we couldn't tell. It's not a terribly scary movie in the sense that most American horror movies are, and it's not going to give most people nightmares. That said, Night Watch delivered the goods in terms of a good plot, suspense, interesting story, and fabulous casting.

One can't help but like all these characters and follow their choices, you even care for the so-called "villains." This movie seems to be about choices. From the beginning the choice was made between the light and dark tribes on a compromise that would allow both sides to live. But this movie is also about gray inside light and dark, and questions the moral authority of light, as if to say that maybe there is another path beyond the old dark and light.

This film introduces several plot points that build and move forward, some of them barely noticed, becoming meaningful during important moments. Thankfully we didn't have cliched scenes of bucktoothed vampires hissing at each other with fingers outstretched like claws (like we really need to see that again in a vampire movie!), and instead treats both sides in this conflict with a certain documentarian detachment. It lets the viewer navigate the moral complexities for themselves, in short, it shows not tells, which is the greatest form of storytelling.

We highly recommend you watch this movie when it comes out. Find out the start times for Night Watch and go see it. It's not going to change your life, but if you are a fan of dark movies, the it's likely you may find it to be an enjoyable movie.
